Tired of your old bedroom decor? Only 3% of people give their bedroom a new look each year. But, with a few easy and inexpensive updates, you can make your room a stylish place. You can make it feel like a new space by changing the lighting, getting new bedsheets, or even just refinishing old furniture.
After updating my bedroom recently, I've seen how small changes can make a big impact. When we first moved in, in 2018, our bedroom was stuck in the past. By simply changing the fan, putting up new curtains, and getting rid of the old carpet, it looked completely different.
I focused on getting timeless, good-quality pieces instead of temporary stuff. Investing in well-made furniture and thoughtful design choices can significantly improve your space without major work. For instance, adding new nightstands, stylish wall lights, and quality sheets can really upgrade your room. I also added some special framed photos and used stylish baskets for storage to keep it organized and chic.
If you want to refresh your bedroom, here are some simple and affordable tips that will help it feel new in no time.
The Current State of Our Bedroom
Right now, my bedroom seems a bit bare. It feels like we haven't quite finished decorating it yet. There's a wide range of furniture, including a wardrobe that Colby made seven years ago from plain pine.
I'm stuck on the wardrobe. I can't choose between painting or staining it. Our bedroom's design is up in the air, waiting for a decision.
Assessing the Bedroom's Needs
Looking around, I see areas that desperately need work. Our decor is all over the place, and that unfinished wardrobe sticks out. I'm really excited to start over. I want to create a space that makes sense and feels good to be in.
Identifying Areas for Improvement
First off, I need to pinpoint what to fix. That wardrobe and the mismatched furniture stand out the most to me. But I also dream of a bedroom style that shouts 'me'. Fixing these things would make my space much more enjoyable.
Bring In New Furniture
If your current bedroom furniture isn't meeting your needs, think about donating or selling it. Then you can look for furniture that suits your style and what you need. Buying brand new furniture can be expensive. But, finding secondhand items and fixing them up is a great way to save money and renew your space in a big way.
Thrifting and Refinishing Furniture
I want to find some secondhand pieces and make them look new for our bedroom. This includes painting the nightstands and finishing the wardrobe. Adding a fresh coat of paint often takes about four layers to really cover a dark color well. Besides painting, just moving furniture like the bed or dresser can completely change how a room feels.
My goal is to find well-made secondhand pieces that I can refinish for our Bohemian style. Places online, like Wayfair, have lots of affordable furniture and decor options. They're great for getting ideas for my own projects. Plus, adding an area rug can make old carpet look better and help pull the room together.
I believe with some effort and imagination, I can turn old furniture into unique pieces for our bedroom. Going for the Bohemian look, I aim to make a comfy, welcoming space that shows off what we like.
Refinishing Bedroom Furniture
Revamping your bedroom doesn't need to cost a lot. One key way to do this is by refinishing old furniture. I found painting and staining saved me a bunch of money. It was much cheaper than buying new, costing me less than $100.
My first task was to stain the pine wardrobe. Next, I'll paint the bedside tables. I'm using Dixie Belle's Fluff, it covers well with just two coats. I'll top it all off with satin clear coat. The dressers and nightstand get one coat on the body, two on the tops, and the bed gets one coat.
This furniture project is the room's biggest DIY effort so far. It's a great way to freshen up the old furniture. Some pieces are more than 20 years old and still sturdy. Using Zinnser primer saved me from a lot of sanding. I applied two coats of primer and a special oil-based paint. This paint will cover well and last a long time.
Updating the bedroom furniture will really transform the room. In the final look, most pieces had visible paint changes. Nightstands were painted 60% of the time and dressers, 40%. Some furniture was painted very brightly, others with shades of blue, and a few mixed paint with natural wood. Focusing on this DIY will make the bedroom feel new, all without big spending.
Levels of Lighting
Lighting is key for any room, especially the bedroom. Our main light is bold, but the nightstand lamps need an upgrade. I believe new lamps with softer shades will make the bedroom feel warmer and more welcoming.
Layering Lighting Sources
To get the best bedroom mood, we need different lights. That’s overhead lights, task lights, and little accents. I want to focus on making the nightstand lights better. I'll add more lights to make everything feel cozy and put together.
Updating Light Fixtures
I’m focusing on updating the bedroom’s main light. Even though I like it now, a new light might match our new look better. It could be a stand-out piece or something simple, but it will change how the room looks and feels.
